In this case, there were only two genotypes, each of which had its own phenotype. Occasionally, however, you will have two genotypes that lead to the same phenotype. Be sure to watch out for occurrences where different phenotypes will lead to the same phenotype.
Finally, itâs time to return to the question that was originally posed. Itâs extremely important to be sure that youâre answering the question that was asked in the problem. The writers of the SAT tests are extremely adept at tricking test-takers by asking a question that does not seem the most obvious, and youâre likely to get the question wrong, even though you could have found the correct answer had you been looking for it. So be sure that youâre not writing the percentage of the offspring that are heterozygous, when you should be writing the percentage of offspring that are homozygous. It often helps to circle or underline the important part of the question.
In this case, our question asked the probability that the offspring will have attached earlobes. In this case, attached is our key word. Because we know that attached earlobes is a recessive trait, we need to look at our Punnett square to the see proportion of offspring that had attached earlobes. We found that 2 out of 4 offspring, corresponding to a probability of 0.50, or 50%, had the attached earlobes.
